Introduction
Concord Publications continue to offer useful and interesting titles in their 'Armour At War; series at an affordable price. This new title by well-known modeller and author Tom Cockle continues this practice.
The Book
The book is in soft cover, as are all the series, and consists of black & white photographs of German armour on the two fronts, 'Western Front - Normandy to Berlin', and 'Eastern Front - Bagration to Berlin'.
Tom cockle begins by giving us a two-page introduction, in which he offers some background to the existence of both fronts, which is necessarily brief given the purpose of this title. We are then immediately in to the 'meat' of the book - the photographs.
The two sections are uneven, in that the much larger proportion is devoted to German armour on the Western Front as opposed to that on the Eastern Front. In total there are 161 black & white photographs in both of the sections, which don't look familiar to me, but then again this isn't surprising since I don't have a huge reference library!
There are examples in the photographs of many different types of armour, many of which are shown in action, but are mainly the Tigers, Panthers, Panzer IV's etc., although there is the occasional 'Wirbelwind' or 2cm FlaK38, and plenty of 251's! Many are also shown wrecked or in Allied hands. The captions accompanying each of the photographs is explanatory, detailing the vehicle and variant shown, and also it's circumstances and location if possible.
The centre of the book consists of sixteen colour plates of various vehicles by the illustrator Douglas Jameson.
Conclusion
If you're a fan of German Armour then obviously this is a must-have. Apart from just being a good read, (I'm going to spend hours going over the photographs), it will also provide lots of inspiration for your next project! Recommended!
