Product Description
It is fifty years since the Beeching axe was wielded on Britain’s railways and much has been documented on whether these drastic changes were for the better or worse. However, Yorkshire Railways: The Golden Age 1890-1920 basks in the bright sunshine of when railway travel was new, celebrated and perhaps overmanned at its peak between 1890 and 1920. Many postcards were published during this period illustrating almost every railway development that took place.

This fascinating and profusely illustrated book draws heavily on these images and in some instances their clarity is breathtaking. They illustrate routes being cut, bridges and viaducts under construction, and the countless railway stations with armies of staff that were available in almost every town and village. Many lines were built to cater for the coal trade that was very much in the ascendancy in parts of South and West Yorkshire. It is interesting to view the work being undertaken on the mineral line at Maltby or the Avoiding Line at Doncaster and marvel at how these great engineering tasks were conducted with primitive plant equipment. Of course, the Golden Age of railways will never appear again, yet Yorkshire Railways: The Golden Age 1890-1920 admirably looks back and illustrates its former glory.
