Product Description
According to Father Daniel, the dragoon corps was founded during the reign of Henri II following the creation of the mounted Arquebusiers in 1554 by the Marshall of Brissac in the Piedmont. They were foot soldiers forming small bands organized into companies or platoons, who travelled on horseback and who used their firearms while on foot. The term "dragoons" given to these men only appeared under the reign of Henri Ill. He referred to mounted Arquebusiers, carabiniers or mounted musketeers. The etymological derivation of the term is probably linked to the origin of the corps. Historians contest its origin, they suggest a German origin (tragen) or an Italian source linked with Marie de Medici 's mounted Arquebusiers who bore dragons on their banners, or from Latin with the Roman emblems
